Within minutes of Lakuyin Stream Cabin 拉庫音溪山屋, the segment begins with a river crossing, so mountaineers may wish to begin the day with sandals and wait until after they have successfully forded the stream to put on hiking shoes and gaiters. The depth and swiftness of the stream will depend on the level of precipitation over the previous few days but, under typical conditions, should not pose a major obstacle for most. From there, the trail ascends up steep grasslands towards an intersection next to a emergency-use helicopter landing pad. From the intersection, the four trails lead north back towards Lakuyin Stream Cabin 拉庫音溪山屋, northwest to the summit of Sancha Mountain 三叉山, southeast to Jiaming Lake 嘉明湖, and west towards Jiaming Lake Cabin 嘉明湖避難山屋. Mountaineers can leave their packs at the trail intersection to summit the peak and head down to Jiaming Lake 嘉明湖, which is Taiwan’s most famous alpine lake, the second-highest at 3,310 meters of elevation, and also referred to as the “angel’s teardrop” 天使的眼淚 or “God’s forgotten sapphire” 上帝遺落的藍寶石 for its beautiful blue color. Because of tourist traffic leaving the main trail, the lake is sometimes closed for several months at a time for restoration, so please encourage all members of your group to stay on the designated trails. After visiting the summit and lake, the trail leads west along the ridgeline and over one more picturesque summit towards Jiaming Lake Cabin 嘉明湖避難山屋.
